  • At least 9 injured in fire as fire burns through building in the Bronx

The fire started around 5:30 a.m.

At least 12 people were injured early on Tuesday after a huge fire tore through an apartment building in NY, reports said. Local media said the fire broke out in a furniture factory on the ground floor of the building.

The Fire Department of NY says 16 people are hurt, four of them seriously, in a fire raging through a Bronx building. Video from the scene showed flames and smoke pouring from the building.

When asked about the injured, Nigro said "They will all be OK, thankfully".

Adults and children fled from the three stories of apartments above, including a man who ran outside with no shirt and no shoes.

Despite the severity of the blaze, he assured the public that none of the injuries were life threatening. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Last Thursday, a fire at a residential building near Bronx Zoo killed 12 people. Firefighters have to conduct more searches of the building, the commissioner added, but at this point there are no reports of anyone missing.

This fire comes just days after 12 people were killed in the city's deadliest fire in more than a quarter-century.

All of the residents of the building were believed to have been evacuated.
