As Kyle Edmund fell to the court of the Pat Rafter Arena and clutched his right ankle in pain, even the British supporters must have wondered if they would make it out of Brisbane without picking up an injury.

While the crowd held their breath, fearing the 22-year-old Englishman had done some major damage, Dimitrov hurdled the net and ran to his opponent, eventually helping him hobble off court. (The jumping, not the sportsmanship.) Edmund would end up finishing the match, though Dimitrov prevailed 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-4.

It was a tense match that went with serve for the most part, with Dimitrov earning the only two breaks - one in the first set and one in the last - on his way to victory. "It's very unfortunate what happened". I'm hitting the ball well and I'm serving really well.

Harrison had been due to face Andy Murray in the second round but after avoiding the Scot, who withdrew from both Brisbane and the Australian Open with his ongoing hip injury, and will now get a shot of reaching the final. That's just me, I guess. "But I came in here a little more level-headed (than the Raonic match), had more time to play, and was able to play my best tennis".

Dimitrov will face Australia's Nick Kyrgios in the semi-final after he overcame Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov 1-6 6-3 6-4. "So the first two matches of the year, I've got through two tough three-setters", added Kyrgios, who beat compatriot Matthew Ebdon 6-7 (3) 7-6 (5) 6-2 in the second round.

Sydneysiders Alex de Minaur and Jordan Thompson have the other two singles wildcards into the Sydney International. The 18-year-old de Minaur stunned fourth seed Milos Raonic in the second round and there was no letdown Friday as he ousted USA qualifier Michael Mmoh 6-4, 6-0 to reach his first ATP semi-final. Harrison was leading 7-6 (6) 4-2 when Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin retired from the contest.
