  • Medical association calls for suspension of private healthcare services across India on Tuesday

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has directed the panel to file its report before the Budget session.

Supporting the fraternity, private hospitals also kept their outpatient departments closed.

Emergency services at government hospitals were not affected.

As part of the stir, doctors belonging to the Indian Medical Association in all hospitals would go on a dawn-to-dusk 12-hour strike, IMA State Prsident E K Ummer said in a statement here. The structure of National Medical Commission is draconian, undemocratic, unparliamentarian and against the basic ethos and ethics that have been upheld by the Medical Council of India. He also added that talks were on with the Indian Medical Association to dissolve the issue.

With doctors staying off duty, the protest against the new bill has left many patients in the lurch. We have been discussing the National Medical Commission Bill with the government since a year. "If passed, the bill allows for any private medical college to raise its undergraduate and post graduate seats on its own", said Shah.

Declaring Tuesday as a "Black Day" the IMA has been strongly opposing the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill which they say would "cripple" the functioning of medical professionals by making them completely answerable to the bureaucracy and non-medical administrators. The Bill allows practitioners of Ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha and homoeopathy (AYUSH), to practise modern medicine after they complete a short-term bridge course.

IMA President expressed his apprehension that the bill will increase corruption in medical education and will push up cost of medical education very high while standard of medical education will fall definitely. And the majority of the new council members will be appointed by the government.

A medical advisory council, including one member representing each state and Union territory (vice-chancellors in both cases), the chairman, University Grants Commission, and the director of the National Accreditation and Assessment Council will make recommendations to the NMC.
