Facebook boss Zuckerberg says to expect less engagement for your pages

  • Facebook's new feature'Today In to provide feeds on local events announcements news

Facebook Inc on Thursday began to change the way it filters posts and videos on its centerpiece News Feed, the start of what Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said would be a series of changes in the design of the world's largest social network.

Facebook said today it will tweak the algorithms that control content in users' news feeds to show more things that have been shared by friends and family, and less content from advertisers and publishers. More public content has meant Facebook has "shifted away from the most important thing Facebook can do - help us connect with each other", Zuckberg said.

Zuckerberg rationalized that the changes will ultimately make for a better Facebook experience, naturally, but might actually cause people to spend less time on the social network.

The decision is based on community feedback that suggested too much brand and public content is being displayed, hindering interactive engagement across the site, Zuckerberg said. In addition, page posts that generate conversation between people will show higher in news feeds, with video expected to be the winning format here. It is, it says, focusing on the quality of connections and content on its platform after a bruising year of stories about fake news, foreign election meddling, filter bubbles and social media addiction.

The Facebook CEO announced the changes on the social network on Thursday evening, and it sounded like a warning for publishers and media partners that rely on the platform to reach audiences.

He also pledged to defend Facebook from nation states. On the other hand, passively scrolling through social media does not.

The new feature, called "Today In", shows users a feed of local events, announcement and other news.

The company's mounting difficulties prompted Zuckerberg to declare last week that his personal challenge for the year - which in the past has run the gamut from learning Mandarin to slaughtering his own meat - would be to fix what ails Facebook. Facebook, he said, had closely studied what kinds of posts had stressed or harmed users.

Google, Twitter and Facebook have come under fire for allowing the spread of bogus news - some of which was directed by Russian Federation - ahead of the 2016 U.S. election and in other countries.

Facebook has been flirting with the idea of "sort of" creating two newsfeeds, one for friends and family and another for pages that would be buried under an Explore Tab. "Because this [change] is naturally good for friend content and for conversation, it's actually going to be good for the diversity of opinion in News Feed".
