Facebook Gives Users Greater Privacy Controls Ahead Of GDPR

  • Much More Than a Day: 2018 is Data Protection Year

Some of the issues include how to delete an old post, how to manage the data Facebook uses to show advertisement and what happens after users delete their Facebook account. Facebook's privacy principles outline how the company approaches privacy, like giving users control of the data they own, and helping them understand how its used and secured. It's also a sign that Facebook is preparing for the European Union's upcoming privacy changes known as General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

To coincide with the publishing of its privacy principles, Facebook said it will also offer users a "privacy check-up" and create a new data control portal, which would put the social network's settings in one place.

As of Monday, users will be reminded by their News Feeds to take a "privacy checkup", Egan wrote in his blog, to ensure they are comfortable about what data they are sharing, and with whom.

Additionally, Facebook is developing resources to help other organizations build privacy into their respective services.

"We recognize that people use Facebook to connect, but not everyone wants to share everything with everyone - including with us", the company explained in its blog post.

These new measures are Facebook's response to feedback from policymakers, users, as well as data security experts. The new videos will appear in the News Feed in the near future. They are the latest European headache for Facebook and other technology companies that have for years been taking flak from regulators and lawmakers over taxes, privacy, collection and use of data and terrorist content.

The new tools had been hinted at by COO Sheryl Sandberg last week and mark a change in attitude at Facebook, which has at times come under fire for how it handles personal information.

The initiative is an example of how tech industry efforts to comply with the GDPR will spill over to users in the United States.

There were seven privacy principles announced by Facebook.

In Europe, Facebook has been the focus of several privacy investigations by government watchdogs in recent years.

In a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, last week, billionaire philanthropist and leading donor to liberal causes George Soros described Facebook and Google as menacing, monopolistic companies.
