GM plans driverless ride-hailing service without manual controls for 2019

  • Meet the Cruise AV, GM's First Production-Ready Driverless Car

Driverless vehicles powered by Cruise are already on the roads in California, Arizona and MI for testing, and these auto may soon be in New York City.

The legal problem in testing the vehicles is that standards require compliance through tests with a human driver and manual steering, acceleration and braking controls.

To realize this vision, GM says it has "engineered safety into the Cruise AV in every step of design, development, manufacturing, testing and validation".

According to General Motors, its latest contribution to automated transport, the Cruise AV, only has to cross a few more regulatory hurdles before it can begin giving people rides across the USA.

Amman said this is the kind of advancement that will have a big impact on the world as the goal is to make transportation more affordable and acceptable and have widespread adoption. Waymo has made a limited number of autonomous vehicles without steering wheels and pedals.

The self-driving Bolt EV-perhaps to be known as the 2020 Chevrolet Cruise AV in official documents-will nearly surely not be sold to the public. Reuters cited company executives as saying that seven states have already accepted the automaker's suggestions. In late 2017, GM announced at an investor event in San Francisco it would launch self-driving vehicles meant for deliveries and ride-hailing services in five USA markets in 2019.

"We are asking NHTSA to give us permission to meet the safety standards through a different approach because we can't achieve them now without a human driver or steering wheel", Hemmersbaugh said. The automaker has been testing its self-driving Chevy Bolt on the streets of San Francisco and Phoenix.

In a report about the project, GM details how the cars will be summoned by an app that automatically sets their climate controls and audio systems to the user's preferences. The company has said the accidents weren't caused by any of the GM cars. The Cruise AV is even able to close its own doors, should passengers leaving the vehicle not shut them properly. Companies need to get large numbers of self-driving cars on the road before they can focus on that. Most of GM's hydrogen-powered vehicles will most likely be ambulances or delivery trucks. It has filed a petition with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration to test the robocars.
