Google now has direct ownership in as many as eight other undersea cables linking its various data centers around the world.

The company, which has invested billion in infrastructure over the past three years, said its Netherlands and Montreal regions will open in the first quarter of 2018, followed by Los Angeles, Finland, and Hong Kong. Over the past three years since Greene came on board, the company has spent a whopping $30 billion beefing up the infrastructure.

Google is also constructing, or taking part in constructing, three undersea cables, which will be commissioned in 2019. Google boasts that it will be the first new cable to land in Chile in nearly 20 years and will serve Google customers across Latin America.

"Owning the cable ourselves has some distinct benefits", Treynor Sloss wrote. It will serve Google users and customers across Latin America. "Also, once the cable is deployed, we can make routing decisions that optimize for latency and availability". Once those are done, Google will move on to the subsea cables. Since Google controls the design and the construction of the cable, the company has full say over the technical specifications, he noted.

Havfrue, the cable running from the U.S.to Denmark and Ireland, will boost capacity for North Atlantic customers.

A second cable, which will run from the United States east coast to Denmark, with a stopover in Ireland, will be 7242 kms in length.

Finally, we come to the HK-G cable, which will see Google teaming with RTI-C and NEC to open up "multiple scalable, diverse paths to Australia", while at the same working hand-in-hand with the new data center that's scheduled to come online in Hong Kong.

The Havfrue cable consortium consist of Google, Facebook, Aqua Comms, and Bulk Infrastructure.

These ventures increase Google's investments in subsea cables to 11 which they directly own, in addition to numerous others which they lease.

Those who live in these regions, according to Google, should be excited. The five new Cloud Platform regions will be added to the 13 existing regions. A third, simply known as the "Hong Kong-Guam" cable, will be built with the help of telecom companies and connect, you guessed it, Hong Kong and Guam.

Google's timing to build a new cable to support their cloud business could not be better.
