  • Pakistan made 246 for nine batting first in the second ODI against New Zealand on Tuesday

The belligerence of Martin Guptill and the pragmatism of Ross Taylor combined to ease New Zealand to victory in a rain-disrupted second one-day worldwide in Nelson.

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed chose to bowl in the first match at the Basin Reserve and New Zealand went on to score 315-7 and to cruise to victory in a rain-affected match in which Pakistan lost two wickets in their first over.

The next match is at Dunedin on Saturday.

Ferguson was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Southee and Astle snapped up two wickets apiece.

Guptill was batting on 31 off 40 balls when rain intervened, but on resumption, he accumulated 56 runs off just 32 balls, ending with five sixes and as many fours.

Pakistan suffered their first major blow even before they took field as the in-form Fakhar Zaman was ruled out of the contest, having sustained a contusion in his right leg while fielding in the series opener.

The biggest partnership of Pakistan's innings was for the eighth wicket as Shadab and Hasan put on 70.

Their unbeaten third-wicket stand was worth 104 runs.

The game was evenly poised when Guptill and Taylor ran for shelter in the 14th over but the experienced pair made a mockery of the run chase, with Guptill reaching his 33rd half century in a game-high 87 from 72 while Taylor chipped in with 44.

Hasan then blasted his first 50 and Khan his second when they mounted a rescue mission with Pakistan 141 for seven in the 37th over.

It was only contributions from Mohammad Hafeez (60), Shadab (52) and Hasan Ali (51) that played a vital role to help Pakistan recover and post 246 for nine in the 50 overs.

Trent Boult took the opening wicket of Imam ul-Haq. Faheem Ashraf (1-30) produced the second breakthrough for Pakistan when Shadab Khan (0-29) produced a blinder at point to dismiss Williamson and New Zealand ended the powerplay with a score of 48 for two.

Lochie Ferguson reduced Pakistan to 39 for three when he entered the attack in the 11th over and immediately had Babar Azam (10) edging a ball to Ross Taylor at first slip.

However, Hasan and Shadab's partnership allowed them to set a competitive total.
