Stockholm A man in his sixties was killed and a woman, 45, was slightly hurt in an explosion outside a Metro station in a southern suburb of the Swedish capital.

Swedish national broadcaster SVT says a man has died after he picked up an unidentified object from the ground near a subway station in Stockholm that detonated in his hand.

According to local media, a 60-year-old man is critical condition, because the device exploded in his hands as he lifted it from the ground. "The woman who was with the man was several meters behind him", police officer Lars Alvarsjo told Swedish Television.

Police also said the man died at the hospital and that the woman was also taken to the hospital and had wounds on her face and both legs.




Police said fragment damages on the victims and findings at the scene indicated the explosive could be a hand grenade, possibly an old one.

Numerous illegal hand grenades found in Sweden are being imported from former Yugoslav nations, he said.

Officials say the blast is not believed to be terror-related.
