Hollywood women launch anti-harassment campaign aimed at helping blue-collar workers, too

03 January, 2018, 02:04 | Author: Christina Harvey

The campaign was brought into the public eye on Monday with full-page adverts in the Times, which helped expose allegations of abuse against Harvey Weinstein, and Spanish-language newspaper La Opinion.

Among the specific steps it announced, Time's Up has established a legal defence fund that, in just 12 days, has raised US$13.4 million (S$17.8 million) towards a US$15 million goal aimed at providing legal aid for women and men who were sexually harassed, assaulted or abused in the workplace.

It's a response to an open letter published in November by Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, a female farmworkers advocacy group representing around 700,000 women, that expressed solidarity with women in the entertainment industry.

Actresses are also being called upon to wear black at the Golden Globe awards on January 7 in solidarity with the movement.

With an explicit thank you to those women for their call and support, the organizers from the entertainment industry behind the "Time's Up" effort say it's imperative to elevate the struggles of all working women.

Hollywood icon Reese Witherspoon shared a post on the initiative on Instagram, along with the message: "I stand with ALL WOMEN across every industry to say#TIMESUP on abuse, harassment, marginalization and underrepresentation".

Several other women who have donated amongst Swift include Jessica Biel, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Stacey Snider, Dana Walden, Regina King, Felicity Huffman, Megan Ellison, Kate Hudson, Viola Davis, Ava DuVernay, Alicia Vikander, Amy Poehler, Olivia Munn, Jessica Chastain, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, among many others.

The plan gives special focus to low-wage agriculture workers, housekeepers, janitors, factory workers and waitresses. The fund will be administrated by National Women's Law Center, a national women's rights legal organization.

Other founding members of the group include Natalie Portman, Naomi Watts, Alyssa Milano, Amy Schumer, Ashley Judd, Blake Lively and Michelle Pfeiffer.

While the group announced itself to the world this week, meetings actually began back in October and have been taking place weekly ever since.
