  • HP recalls computer batteries over fire risk

The U.S. CPSC reports that the batteries were sold separately for between $50 and $90.

Potentially risky products include traditional laptops and convertibles part of the HP Probook family (64x G2 and G3, as well as the 65x G2 and G3), the x360 line (specifically, x360 310 G2 and Pavilion x360 models), the Envy m6, HP 11, plus several ZBook mobile workstations (the 17 G3, 17 G4, and Studio G3).

HP is offering free battery replacement service to users with an affected model, regardless of warranty status.

Batteries in a number of laptops from HP are overheating, and thereby pose "a fire and burn hazard to customers". As for physical damage, there has been one incident of a user incurring first degree burns to the hand.

If users that do have an affected battery however, HP has advised against removing it manually.

HP has created a support page where its laptop owners can see whether their units are at risk of overheating.

"Many of these batteries are internal to the system, which means they are not customer replaceable", warned HP. Not all batteries of the affected laptops are part of the recall, which is why the company has released a HP Battery Validation Utility to check if the particular battery in a notebook computer is affected. Consumers should go to the HP website to check if their battery is included in the recall.

"HP's primary concern is for the safety of our customers", it said.

The recall is only for the battery, not the computer itself.

The affected batteries were sold with the listed HP computers, or at Best Buy and other authorized dealers nationwide. They have also created a "Battery Safe Mode" update to install into your device to help prevent it from overheating.
