The recent eruption of protests in Iran has, predictably, split Washington in two, between those counseling silence and those urging vocal support.

Saturday saw a fourth straight day of pro-government rallies in smaller cities as the regime sought to emphasize the end of five days of unrest that claimed 21 lives and saw hundreds arrested around the country.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Monday all officials can be criticized and that protesters in Iran are upset about more than economic issues.Rouhani also called for the lifting of bans on social media. Eight people were arrested in The Hague after breaking into the Iranian Embassy during a protest.

In October 2017, US President Donald Trump refused to confirm to the US Congress that Iran strictly abides the nuclear deal but at the same time he did not question compliance on the worldwide level.

Germany, as well as France, has "warned against attempts at instrumentalising the domestic conflicts in Iran", said Gabriel.

But Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said the United States was "abusing the platform of the Security Council" with a "bogus" pretext to interfere in the domestic affairs of a member nation, in comments that nearly echoed those of the Iranian ambassador to the UN.

Parliament met behind closed doors on Sunday to discuss the week of unrest with the ministers of interior and intelligence, Iran's police chief and the deputy commander of the elite Revolutionary Guard, state television said. The Guards said the unrest had been "created ... by the United States, Britain, the Zionist regime (Israel), Saudi Arabia, the hypocrites (Mujahideen) and monarchists".

On Saturday, videos on social media showed a heavy police presence in cities, including Khorramabad in southwestern Iran, where on Wednesday evening social media posts showed protesters throwing stones at riot police.

Residents contacted by Reuters in various cities have said the protests had subsided in recent days, after the government intensified a crackdown by dispatching Revolutionary Guard forces to several provinces. State TV showed tens of thousands of people marching in orchestrated pro-government demonstrations.

A police spokesman said most of those arrested were "duped" into joining the unrest and had been freed on bail, the state news agency IRNA reported.

Various Iranian officials said on January 6 that hundreds of detainees - including many students and other young people - had been released, some after agreeing to sign a pledge not to "re-offend", the semiofficial ISNA news agency reported.

Those funds were never specifically earmarked for democracy assistance in Iran and could be used more broadly, but nevertheless, the program did important, if limited work, especially supporting internet freedom and offshore training of activists.

"However, the leaders of the troubles are in the hands of the judiciary and in prison", he added.

Tehran University Vice-President Majid Sarsangi said the university had set up a committee to track the fate of students arrested during the unrest.

MP Mahmoud Sadeghi said little was known about at least 10 of the 90 students detained.
