Julian Assange Gets Ecuador Citizenship After 5 Years of Living in Embassy

  • Assange's'eviction may be a result of his disagreement with Ecuador's President

In addition to the aforementioned crimes, Assange was also charged and tried for the rape of two Swedish women. Assange denies the claims, saying the young women consented. The WikiLeaks chief believes that the United States government is seeking his extradition and prosecution.

Some 500,000 classified military documents concerning American diplomacy and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq had already been released by Wikileaks earlier that year.

November 2011: Assange fails in his appeal to the High Court against the decision to extradite him.

Espinosa emphasized that besides possible global assistance, cooperation will also be required from United Kingdom authorities, which are looking to arrest Assange for violating the terms of his 2012 bail.

Assange initially sought refuge in the embassy after Sweden sought to have him arrested in connection with allegations of rape and assault.

"We have reminded Mr Assange that he has no reason to interfere in Ecuadoran politics because his status does not allow it".

According to Jeff Sessions, the US attorney general, speaking in May, Mr. Assange's arrest had become a "priority".

May 19, 2017: Swedish prosecutors announce the investigations have been discontinued.

A United Nations panel concluded in 2016 that Assange was under arbitrary detention. Britain rejects the ruling.

Referencing a 2016 UN ruling that said Assange was being "arbitrarily detained", WikiLeaks responded: "The UN ruling, issued nearly two years ago, is crystal clear in its language".

- Beginning of the end?

The biggest crisis came in October 2016, when the embassy cut his internet service after WikiLeaks published a trove of emails from then-U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's campaign. Later, the WikiLeaks founder tweeted an image of himself wearing Ecuador's national football team shirt. Although Sweden is no longer seeking his extradition, Assange has refused to leave, saying that he fears Britain would extradite him to the United States to face charges relating to his involvement in multiple releases of documents that USA officials say have damaged national security.

The Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) says they have granted naturalization to Julian Assange.

He said the decision to grant him asylum in 2012 had "generated problems" in Ecuador and had only discredited the country overseas, particularly in the United States.

She told a press conference in Quito that Ecuador had asked London to recognize Assange as a diplomat - which would give him safe passage out of the embassy without fear of arrest - but Britain had refused. Britain refuses to do so.
