  • Fodder scam case Got calls from Lalu Yadav's men but will follow law says CBI court judge

Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad on Saturday was sentenced to three-and-a-half years jail in a fodder scam case by the Special CBI court in Ranchi.

The punishment was handed down to 69-year-old Prasad by CBI court judge Shiv Pal Singh through videoconferencing since the RJD leader is lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail after being convicted in the case on December 23, CBI counsel Rakesh Prasad said.

Apart from Lalu Yadav, other convicts Phool Chand, Mahesh Prasad, Bake Julius, Sunil Kumar, Sushil Kumar, Sudhir Kumar and Raja Ram were also sentenced to 3.5 years in jail.

While quoting party's state president Ramchandra Purve, it is reported by the media sources that, Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of Opposition and Lalu's son, is likely to become the party's CM face for the 2020 Assembly post.

This is the second fodder scam case in which Prasad has been jailed. The court also slapped Rs 5 lakh fine on each. "Lalu Prasad Yadav has blessings of the almighty and we have faith that he will get justice".

Apart from Lalu, Mishra and 20 others accused were present in the court when the quantum of sentence was pronounced.

Earlier today, while hearing the case, the judge said that 'an open jail is best for these people (convicts), as they also have experience of cow farming.

In 2013, Prasad was convicted in the first fodder scam case and was sentenced to five years imprisonment along with a fine of Rs25 lakh by another special CBI court.

Lalu Prasad Yadav's advocate on Friday had filed a plea before Ranchi Special CBI Court demanding minimum punishment to the RJD Chief on health grounds.

The court had, however, acquitted six others including former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra in the case.
