LG Display has showcased a new 88-inch OLED display with an 8K resolution, ahead of the upcoming CES 2018 show in Las Vegas.
"The 33 million self-emissive OLED pixels in each 8K OLED display create the more delicate images and unmatched picture quality that are already highly regarded in the UHD TV industry".
The upside is that, while LCD panels have extra weight thanks to the backlighting units, the OLED equivalent is far lighter. The Korean consumer electronics giant has just unveiled its newest and biggest TV yet, with an 88-inch panel sporting the world's largest TV resolution. The show starts on 9 January, with press conferences and coverage to be found on Pocket-lint from a few days beforehand.
Because OLED displays are self-emissive LG claims it has been able to achieve this without sacrificing brightness.
However, the 8K OLED TV will not be hitting stores anytime soon, as the company is expected wait it out for 8K resolution content to enter the mainstream market. Till date, the highest resolution available on TVs has been 4K or Ultra HD which most of the flagship models come with. Take for instance LG which has just taken the wraps off of a huge OLED TV with an eye-popping 8K resolution.
But that was the same when 4K displays were forayed into the market by vendors. Not because LG pays us to say so or because we just have a bias towards their products (we're also nearly invariably critical of the company's rather crappy budget 4K UHD TVs), but because OLED really is some of the best 4K TV display technology we've ever seen for faithfully rendering consumer entertainment in 4K HDR. However, Samsung does have an 88-inch TV which features a 2,160p (4K) resolution, HDR, and built-in Wi-Fi. The new facility in Guangzhou, China, was recently just approved by the Korean government as part of the two countries' attempts to improve relations.
Rival Samsung has been critical of OLED, saying the burn-in problems intensify when the screen gets bigger.
