  • Kabul: At least five soldiers killed in attack on military academy

At least two security forces persons died and more than 10 injured after five terrorists carried out a pre-dawn attack on an army unity, guarding a military academy in Afghanistan's capital Kabul on Monday, global media reported.

Both the Taliban and IS have stepped up attacks in recent months in Kabul and elsewhere across Afghanistan, including massive bombings staged by militants determined to inflict maximum casualties, instill terror in the population and undermine confidence in Afghan President Ashraf Ghani's government and the country's security forces. "The last attacker is still clashing with security forces", Waziri said, adding that "two security force members were also killed and 10 others were wounded". Five people were killed and 26 wounded while the organisation was forced to suspend operations across the country.

"One bomber detonated himself and the rest of the attackers are resisting".

Witnesses told AFP they heard several explosions and gunfire at around 5 am (0030 GMT).

Kabul police spokesman Basir Mujahid told AFP there had been rocket and gunfire but now "it is calm".

Islamic State and the Taliban have recently carried out attacks in the city.

"An Afghan army battalion has come under attack this (Monday) morning".

In October a Taliban suicide bomber killed 15 Afghan army trainees as they travelled home from the Marshal Fahim academy. Monday's attack comes two days after a massive Taliban-claimed suicide vehicle bombing in the city that killed over 100 people and left more than 200 people injured. The Taliban-claimed attack resulted in a 12-hour standoff leading to the death of 22 people.

Kabul is on high alert as the city braces for further attacks.
