  • Mumbai man sucked into MRI machine, dies in 2 minutes

The cylinder was sucked towards the machine with great force and dragged him along with it. They were waiting for the doctor outside the MRI room, when a ward boy attached to the ICU told them to take the oxygen cylinder inside. The police have arrested the resident doctor Saurabh Lanjrekar, ward boy, Vitthal Chavan, and attendant Sunita Surve, all three who were working in the MRI room when the accident occurred.

Maru's body has been sent for the postmortem in Mumbai's JJ Hospital.

The victim, Rajesh Maru (32), had gone to Nair Hospital to visit his sister's mother-in-law Laxmiben Solanki (62), who was undergoing treatment there.

Solanki further said that the MRI machine was on when Maru walked into the room.

Dr David Hintenlang, from the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Centre, told The New York Times past year that some clothes such as socks and underwear contain metal in unexpected places - which is why patients are usually asked to change into hospital gowns before an MRI.

In some cases, people with implants or embedded metal can not safely get an MRI and must use a different scanning technology instead. "Accidentally, the oxygen cylinder also went inside along with the person and he died". Finally, he allowed two people, including me and Maru, to go inside the MRI room with my mother.

"When we told him that metallic objects aren't allowed inside an MRI room, he said "sab chalta hai, hamara roz ka kaam hai" (it's fine, we do this every day)".

Mr Maru was allegedly told the machine had been switched off.

Even heavier objects such as an office chair, for instance, can be slowly sucked into a MRI machine, as an online video shows. The hospital authorities have also handed over the CCTV footage of the incident to the police. However, it has suspended a doctor, a ward boy and a sweeper after the incident. The magnetic field made it impossible to pull away from it. "It's due to their carelessness that Rajesh died", Solanki was quoted as saying.

Protesting the hospital's apathy and lack of help following the incident, members of Maru's family occupied the office of Dean Dr. Ramesh Bharmal in Nair Hospital on Sunday morning and refused to leave until action was taken against the doctor and the hospital staff. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the family of the victim.
