  • National Football League investigating Panthers again for potential violation of concussion protocol

The NFL and NFL Players Association are conducting a joint review into how the Carolina Panthers handled the concussion protocol as it related to a fourth-quarter hit on quarterback Cam Newton in Sunday's NFC playoff loss at New Orleans.

"We are in contact now with the Panthers' medical staff and we will not comment further until those conversations are completed", the National Football League said in a written statement issued through a spokesman. Newton took a knee as he walked toward the sideline and pointed toward his right eye.

Jordan, a first-team All-Pro in 2017, finished Sunday's game with three tackles, one for loss, one sack and two passes defensed. And when told that Newton's outfit was actually called a romper, Jordan replied, "The romp-him?" He was seen on the sidelines with ice on his eye and claimed a visor poked him in the eye, which is why he went down.

However, the question could become whether or not Newton should have been taken to the locker room for evaluations.

'But if dazed Newton hadn't dropped down to the field himself, no one would have done or said a thing.

'NFL concussion protocol should have dictated taking out Cam Newton and examining him immediately after direct hit to his head, ' Pat Leonard wrote.

'My helmet had came down low enough over my eyelid and it got pressed by the player's stomach I believe.

"I'm not here to make that type of judgment", Jordan said in the Saints' postgame locker room. I'm not going to take the cowardly way and point somebody else out'. "I appreciate him for being that good ol' quarterback".

The Seattle Seahawks were fined $100,000 in Week 10 after the league and union determined they failed to apply the concussion protocol properly after quarterback Russell Wilson took a blow to the head against the Arizona Cardinals.

The team soon indicated he'd been cleared of a concussion.

The changes came in conjunction with a decision not to punish the Houston Texans for their handling of a concussion suffered by quarterback Tom Savage.
