Nunes Memo Could Prove Biggest Political Scandal, Strassel Says

  • Devin Nunes Won't Even Show His Infamous Memo to the Justice Department

With all the fervor in Washington D.C. about the investigation into alleged collusion between Russian Federation and the campaign of President Donald Trump, some beltway insiders are trying to divert public attention from the White House crisis, so House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) compiled a memo, the contents of which are entirely unknown but was crafted as a distraction from the special investigation into the Trump campaign's alleged collusion with Russian Federation prior to the 2016 presidential election.

The Washington Examiner obtained a letter sent to Nunes by the Justice Department that said that "it would be extraordinarily reckless for the Committee to disclose such information publicly", and requested that it be given a chance to review the memo to see how it might affect matters of national security. Democrats, in turn, have accused Republicans of constructing a false narrative in an attempt to undermine the inquiry on behalf of Trump.

The rebuke came as Democrats announced that they had drafted their own classified memo based on the same underlying materials to rebut Nunes.

"The texts between Strzok and Page referenced a 'secret society, '" Rep. John Ratcliffe, R-Texas, wrote on Twitter, adding: "It's clear from the thousands of texts we reviewed that Strzok and Page held a manifest bias against in favor of Hillary Clinton and showed an intent to act upon that bias".

Boyd also wrote that "wider distribution of the classified information" presumably contained in Nunes' memo would be a "significant deviation" from the Department's agreement with House intel and the office of House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Many conservatives were convinced the missing emails were evidence that a network of people within the Justice Department was secretly working to sabotage Trump's administration, including Sen.

The Nunes memo is one battle, but the larger war will only be won when Trump and his minions have been removed from government. But Democrats say the memo is a misleading political attack created to distract from more pressing issues, like the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

According to CNN, three Republican House Committee chairmen met Sunday about coordination of steps to declassify and release the Nunes memo, and at least some of its substantiating source reports.

In addition, we have also heard that [Intelligence Committee members are] considering making the classified memorandum available to the public and the media, an unprecedented action.

And I say reportedly because, as you said, this memo is classified. Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd, a Trump appointee, notified the congressman by letter Thursday.

He said the memo and supporting documents give a "road map" to how the FISA surveillance program was abused by the Obama Justice Department and the Democratic Party during the 2016 election. You may remember that Nunes stepped aside from the committee's Russian Federation investigation amid an ethics probe into his handling of classified information.

One is about how former spy Christopher Steele told the Federal Bureau of Investigation he had not revealed his evidence of collusion between Trump associates and Russian Federation to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, then declaring later in a lawsuit that he had. "Let everyone look at it", he told me, "so they can enjoy the piece of lettuce between two buns that's there". The importance of discrediting the F.B.I. will increase as Mueller moves closer to laying out a case that Trump obstructed justice and that his associates lied to investigators. "So, of course, I'm going to want to know what secret society are you talking about because you're supposed to be investigating objectively the person who just won the electoral college".
