Twitter shares increased by 5% after Facebook announced that it will demote business, brand and media posts in news feed shake up. One of the ways we do this is by connecting people to meaningful posts from their friends and family in News Feed. To do this, we will predict which posts you might want to interact with your friends about, and show these posts higher in feed. Visiting our Facebook page, rather than letting the News Feed serve our content to you, is a good way to keep up with us.

The social network has become an important way for brands, media companies and other content creators to reach Facebook's growing audience, which now numbers more than 2.07 billion people.

Facebook will soon give more weight to posts from friends, family members, and those that spur conversation.

"By making these changes, I expect the time people spend on Facebook and some measures of engagement will go down", Zuckerberg wrote.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that Facebook is making these changes because he is concerned about his legacy and that of the company he founded.

"We can feel more connected and less lonely, and that correlates with long term measures of happiness and health", he wrote. It has also been questioned about how its algorithms might have prioritized inaccurate news in News Feeds, thereby, influencing the recent American presidential election. Since then, annual sales have soared from US$5.1 billion to an estimated US$40.2 billion a year ago - and the news feed has become increasingly crowded with advertisements and posts from brands and publications. Many creators who post videos on Facebook prompt discussion among their followers, as do posts from celebrities.

"We believe these changes will be beneficial to Facebook in the medium and long term", said Mr Brian Weiser of the Pivotal Research Group. On the other hand, passively reading articles or watching videos-even if they're entertaining or informative-may not be as good. They're getting pressure from governments, companies and users to reduce the amount of fake news entering public discourse and they're not quite sure how to handle it.

While these changes are headed in the right direction, they're still based on an algorithm and algorithms can be gamed.

The idea is to help users to connect with people they care about, not make them feel depressed and isolated.

If he is honest about reducing the fake and low-calorie news stories clogging up users' Facebook feed, Zuckerberg could turn to the press for help. That means the experience has largely centered on passive consumption of content.

"We started making changes in this direction a year ago, but it will take months for this new focus to make its way through all our products", Zuckerberg wrote in his Facebook post.

For example, there are many tight-knit communities around TV shows and sports teams. In fact, live videos on average get six times as many interactions as regular videos.

Shares of Facebook slid more than 5 percent to $177.31 in premarket trading Friday after the change was unveiled.
