Only a few minutes into Sunday night's Golden Globes red-carpet broadcast on E!, Debra Messing explained to host Giuliana Rancic why almost all the women were wearing black.

Though Winfrey has previously denied that she plans to run for office, the night refueled the conversation, with her longtime partner Stedman Graham even telling the L.A. Times: "It's up to the people". "We feel emboldened in this particular moment", Streep said, "to stand together in a thick black line dividing then from now".

The touchstone of her speech was the #MeToo movement. (The men were, too, but they always do that.) Messing explained that it was part of the Time's Up initiative, which supports women who suffer from sexual harassment and assault - and not just in Hollywood. Using her character to describe a past culture in which people were afraid to speak out, Dern urged Hollywood to support and employ survivors fearless enough to come forward.

This is the speech we need our children to watch.

"I'm being seen for who I am and being appreciated for who I am and that makes it much more hard to dismiss me or anyone who looks like me", the drama series best actor said. "And here are the all-male nominees", Portman archly announced.

There were other moments, unrelated to this through line: Tommy Wiseau, the eccentric (probably an understatement) writer-director of the terrible (probably an understatement) 2003 film The Room, joined James Franco on stage as Franco accepted the award for outstanding lead actor in a comedy or musical for playing Wiseau in The Disaster Artist. "That was 34 years ago, folks". I'd love to have Oprah.

It was clear from the first victor that it was going to be her night.

"2020, I'm wondering if you've narrowed down your shortlist of VP candidates", co-anchor and best friend Gayle King joked. "We're here for the work".

As her longtime partner Stedman Graham watched from the audience, she told the story of a black woman from Alabama named Recy Taylor, who died at the age of 97 on December 28, 2017, and her fight for justice after her rape by six white men in 1944.

Her epic acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award is now also moving markets. But her hopeful message - "A new day is on the horizon" - could have doubled as a campaign rallying cry. Director Ava DuVernay later wrote on Twitter that the room was "still vibrating like electricity from that speech".

Elisabeth Moss, named best actress in a TV drama for The Handmaid's Tale, dedicated her win to author Margaret Atwood, whose book is the source material for the series. He thanked the show's creator, Dan Fogelman, for writing a role "for a black man that can only be played by a black man".

"I'd never seen a black man being celebrated like that", Winfrey said. Entertainment Television on the issue while doing interviews with them on the red carpet.

"She's lost her mind now", Winfrey said. "A time where no one will have to say "Me Too" ever again". "I miss Catt Sadler". That's indisputably true, but it's also beside the point. Former President George W. Bush put makeup artist Lois Cassano on the payroll from the beginning, though, like Price, she also handled other staff duties like managing the press and answering phones.

On an evening recognizing women in Hollywood, it was certainly apt to have Thelma and Louise, aka Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, present an award. "They are women whose names we'll never know".

She was joking there, too.

The Golden Globes kicked off with a monologue from host Seth Meyers, who immediately made a decision to talk about the disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

Del Toro later tweeted a photo of an In-N-Out drive-thru menu board with the caption "After the globes celebration".
