Second of supermoon trilogy 'wolf moon' set for skies tonight

  • The varying distance of the Earth from the Sun throughout the course of the year

It's 2018 and fidget spinners are today's fish and chip paper because there's a new obsession sweeping the world on the first day of the new year.

The moon is called blue because it's the second full moon in the month and it's red because it's going to be eclipsed.

There's an added bonus for stargazers, astronomy nerds and telescope aficionados - January's blue moon on the 31st will feature a total lunar eclipse.

From two supermoons, a meteor shower to a lunar eclipse, here's a list of astronomical events for the first month of 2018. Plus, both the January full moons will be super moons, appearing about 7% bigger than normal. On Jan. 31, the moon will rise at 4:54 p.m. and be visible for almost 10 hours.

2018 will also bring another blue moon in March. For Eastern time (EST) in the USA, residents in that region will see the eclipse begin at 6:48 AM and the moon will dip out of view shortly thereafter. The view was all the more fascinating, as this time it was also a supermoon (the one that occurs when the moon is closest to the Earth and appears 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter).

Perigee is an astronomical term that identifies the nearest distance of the moon to the earth.

Beach shack operators had complained about a lack of warning earlier this month, after a combination of cyclone Ockhi and Supermoon wrecked havoc on the beaches, with the rising water damaging several beach shacks and eroding beach stretches, popular with tourists.

There are no full moons during February this year.

With the moon being as close to Earth as it is, there is a significant impact on the tides. It looks slightly larger and slightly brighter, and definitely catches the eye.

The moon just like the Earth does not have a completely round orbit.

On January 15, the moon is estimated to be 406,423 kilometers away.

Another Supermoon is on the calendar for January 31, 2018.

The good news... you will not have to wait long at all.
