  • SpaceX to launch mysterious Zuma payload Sunday

SpaceX has confirmed that its rocket, and the undisclosed national security payload, are ready for launch, and weather conditions appear to be generally favorable.

The launch window opens at 8 p.m. and closes at 10 p.m.

The Zuma launch was initially planned for November, but was delayed due to issues with the fairing, which houses the payload on its way to being deployed into orbit around Earth.

It's still unclear where the Zuma mission will be heading.

The launch is SpaceX's first in what is expected to be a busy year.

SpaceX yesterday blasted off a secretive U.S. government payload known as Zuma, a mission whose nature - and the agency behind it - remains a mystery.

The mission - referred to as code name Zuma - took off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on a Falcon 9 rocket. After the launch, the rocket's first stage will attempt to make a return to a landing site along the Florida coast for what would be the company's 21 rocket landing.

The Falcon 9 rocket will carry Zuma, a US government spacecraft, into low-Earth orbit. But Sunday's launch is perhaps the company's most secretive yet.

Sunday night's launch will be streamed live online.

We do know that aerospace and defense company Northrop Grumman procured Zuma's launch atop a Falcon 9 for the USA government - but we don't know which agency will operate the satellite, or if its mission is civilian or military.
