  • SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket test firing goes off without a hitch

Elon Musk's unbelievable plan to use his own Tesla Roadster as the demonstration payload for the inaugural test launch of SpaceX's new rocket, the Falcon Heavy, is reportedly set to happen on February 6.

The static fire test clears the way for Falcon Heavy's upcoming launch after it ignited all its 27 engines on the launcher's first stage for about 10 seconds to check if they are flight-ready.

CEO said in a tweet shortly after that the test firing "was good", adding that Falcon Heavy will launch "in a week or so".

Touted as the "world's most powerful rocket", the Falcon Heavy is created to one day carry crew and supplies to deep space destinations such as the Moon and Mars.

Comprised of three reusable Falcon 9 rocket cores strapped together, the spacecraft is one of the most powerful ever made.

As with all static fires of flight-proven boosters, the static fire was anticipated to last 7 seconds from the time of engine ignition to engine shutdown.

In terms of payload delivery to orbit, the Falcon Heavy will have more capacity than any rocket since the Apollo era's Saturn V: as much as 140,000 pounds to low Earth orbit, or 37,000 pounds to Mars. More impressive that the output of the platform however, is that Musk claims each Falcon Heavy launch will cost less than a third of the price of a Delta IV launch, which is now the most powerful operational platform in use today.

SpaceX's first Falcon Heavy flight will be about testing it in real-world flight.

The megarocket's launch will represent another major first for Musk and his company's pursuit of re-usability.

SpaceX state that Falcon Heavy was designed from the outset to carry humans into space, restoring the possibility of flying crewed missions to the Moon or Mars.

The 229-foot-tall rocket has a new core stage and two previously-flown side boosters that will run on kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants. Elon Musk has also said the rocket will carry a pair of civilians on a week-long trip around the moon.
