There's A Flight That Took Off In 2018 And Landed In 2017

A tweet about the trip from New Zealand to Hawaii generated a spirited discussion online, with close to 300 comments made about the journey.

As expected, Twitter had plenty to say about the odd occurrence.

But the flight took people back in time, and by the time they arrived at Honolulu, Hawaii, they were back in 2017 with the flight time pegged at 10:15 a.m. HST on December 31.

Honolulu is a full 23 hours behind Auckland, so as the plane took off at just after midnight on January 1 on New Zealand's north island, it was still 1am on December 31 in the destination city. Eight hours later, when it landed in Honolulu, it was still December 31, 2017.

Many responded with gifs from 1985 science fiction film Back To The Future, or memes to express bewilderment.

In between New Zealand and Hawaii lies the global date line and so the former is 23 hours ahead of the later.

But it is not as uncommon as some might believe with planes crossing the International Date Line every day. "We left NZ in 2017, flew into 2018 and flew back into 2017". This happened due to a takeoff delay, and a quirk in the time zones that define the world.

So, if you want to celebrate New Year twice next year, then make sure you hop onto a flight that crosses the International Date Line after taking off in the New Year. In other words, it happens a lot.
