  • Twitter explains why it won't block Trump

The company also sought to counter assertions that controversial figures like Trump were kept on the platform largely because they helped Twitter's bottom line.

Twitter said shutting down Trump's account after the controversial post "would hide important information people should be able to see and debate".

Trump, who has exchanged a series of threats and insults with the Pyongyang regime since a year ago, tweeted late Tuesday that he, too, has a "nuclear button" that is "much bigger and more powerful" than the one North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has. "Elected world leaders play a critical role in that conversation due to their outsized impact on our society", they wrote.

President Trump's provocative tweet aimed at North Korean leader Kim Jung Un triggered questions to the White House on Wednesday about his fitness for office. The indignation over the president's latest tweets was so deep that some protesters projected signs onto Twitter's headquarters building in San Francisco this week calling the service "Trump's dog whistle".

The group says Trump's recent message directed at North Korean leader Kim Jung Un is a violation of that rule. Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!

The announcement came just days after a tweet from President Donald Trump hinting at the use of United States nuclear weapons sparked criticism that the social network was allowing threats of violence.

It said such a move would also not silence a world leader, but it "would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions".

"We review Tweets by leaders within the political context that defines them, and enforce our rules accordingly", the company explained.

The company's policy has an exemption for military or government entities, but Twitter also said that the Trump tweet did not constitute a "specific threat".

"No one person's account drives Twitter's growth, or influences these decisions", the company added. "Any time we have any leader tweet, including Trump, there's a very interesting and thriving conversation".
