  • West Coast gets prime view of total lunar eclipse

The celestial coincidence hasn't happened in more than 150 years. The institute also said the colour of the moon depends on the nature and quantity of the dust particles, water droplets and aerosols present in the earth's atmosphere during the time.

"Because then we're going to see that whole entire eclipse, providing it's clear then", Nichols says. "On average, that corresponds to once every 265 years!" For those of us in the Northeast, it will be a partial eclipse visible in the early morning hours of January 31. However when the moon the furthest away from the earth it is out there, 252,000 miles. "We will have telescope sessions, where people can look at planets and their moons if time permits", said Prof Ravinder Banyal of IIA. While the moon is in the Earth's shadow it will take on a reddish tint, known as a "blood moon".

During a lunar eclipse, there is a sun-Earth-moon alignment. The eclipse will be visible before sunrise on January 31 for those in North America, Alaska and Hawaii. Johnston said another lunar eclipse will occur on January 21, 2019, that will be visible throughout the country. The next one visible in North America will be on January 21, 2019.

Early to rise High Country skygazers may spot the setting sliver of a super blue blood moon-better seen in the Western United States, Pacific Islands, or afloat the Great Pacific Garbage Patch off the coast of California-the likes of which was last seen March 31, 1866, according to sources. When the Earth is in the way of the Sun's rays, they pass through our atmosphere, scattering the spectrum green-to-violet in a bigger way than what's left: the red.

Despite the name, blue moons aren't actually blue but white.

"If you happen to be on the wrong side of the Earth, you'll miss it", Aufdenberg said, adding that Florida tends to be a poor area for viewing lunar eclipses.

But a blue moon isn't blue at all, and Wednesday's moon will be no exception.

So what's a blue moon in the first place?

A blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. The light that reaches the moon appears red once reflected back to us on Earth. Due to 29.5 days lunar period, it is possible that two Full moons could fall in the same calendar month (except in the month of February which has only 28).

This latest supermoon, however, is also dubbed a "blue" moon because it will be the second full moon this month. They marked the passing of the year in full moons, each one named for a predominant component of the season.

A series of blood moons in 2014 and 2015 caused some religious leaders to predict the end of the world was nigh.

This will be the final supermoon in NASA's "supermoon trilogy" in recent weeks. The closest point in its orbit is called the perigee.

From supermoon to blood moon. By 7:31 a.m., the moon will have set under the horizon and will no longer be visible.
