Noe Garcia, 13, an eighth-grader at the middle school, said he was still a little shaken from the shooting but felt well enough to come back.

Two students have been injured in a shooting at a Los Angeles middle school. He told AP that the 12-year-old girl, his classmate, told him it was an accident, saying, "I didn't mean to".

"They thought it was a toy gun, but then it shot", Urbina said.

Two other students, 11 and 12, had graze wounds related to the incident and a 30-year-old female staffer had a minor injury. Both victims are 15 years old.

The boy, who was shot in the temple, was in stable condition Thursday afternoon, and was expected to fully recover, said Dr. Carl Chudnofsky of L.A. County-USC Medical Center.

The boy was initially listed in critical condition but doctors said that the bullet didn't hit anything vital or cause any life-threatening injury. The 12-year-old girl arrested for the incident at Sal Castro Middle School is being charged with negligent discharge of a firearm.

"We do not know yet. how our young person on this campus ended up having the ability to have access to a firearm and bring it onto campus", said Los Angeles School Police Chief Steve Zipperman.

Police said she's retained an attorney and was not answering questions.

At the front gate of the school, McNair said she was directed to the back, which was blocked off.

The girl was taken into custody minutes after the shooting.

Hernandez left work and sped to the school campus. "I'm scared." Without thinking, Diego told her he will be right there, and everything was going to be OK. "There is no more safety threat to the students of this school".

Just yesterday, another shooting occurred in an American public school; however, this time authorities are concluding that the incident was accidental.

Castro has about 365 students in grades 6-8 and almost all are Hispanic and many from low-income families.

About 360 students from the sixth to the eighth grade attend the middle school, located in one of Los Angeles' most densely populated neighbourhoods.

The district has a policy which states random searches should be carried out daily with a metal detector wand.
