Airline Denies Making Student Flush Pet Hamster Down The Toilet

  • A Spirit Airlines flight is seen in a file

That's when Aldecosea said that an airline representative suggested that she flush the hamster down the toilet or let it loose outside.

Of course, it's unquestionable that Spirit Airlines' incompetence in first assuring Aldecosea that she could board with her hamster, then rescinding that permission, sparked this entire heartbreaking chain of events.

But Aldecosea's attorney, Adam Goodman, told the Herald that this case is very different. Nevertheless, when she attempted to check in, Spirit insisted that Pebbles could not board with her.

While she was panicking, she alleges that a member of Spirit staff suggested she either let Pebbles go free outside or flush her pet down the toilet.

The Miami Herald reported Belen Aldecosea was on her way from college to Florida.

Waving goodbye to loved ones at the airport is always emotional, but knowing you will see them on your return makes it worth it. unless you flush them down the toilet, that is.

"Her description of the scene is flat-out horrific: "[Pebbles] was scared. "It was horrifying trying to put her in the toilet", Aldecosea told the Herald. "I sat there for a good 10 minutes crying in the stall".

Aldecosea eventually flushed Pebbles down the toilet after she was unable to find someone to take the hamster or rent a vehicle to drive instead of flying, the attorney says.

Aldecosea says she tried to rent a auto, take a Greyhound bus and arrange for a shipping company to transport her pet but that none of those options panned out.

PETA has since condemned the move, calling it both cruel and illegal. She said she called Spirit twice, and was told it was fine to take the hamster with her.

So far, it does not appear that the student is facing any charges.

Nevertheless, the US Transportation Safety Administration has no problem with carry-on hamsters. Aldecosea even had her doctor's letter certifying Pebbles.

In her account to the Herald, Aldecosea says tried everything imaginable, including renting a auto (she says there weren't any available) and reaching out to her friends (they were hours away back at school, she says).

Explains Goodman, the animal helped comfort the student before she knew the growth was benign.

"She was so loving". She says needed to catch her flight and felt pressure to get home as quickly as possible to deal with a medical issue.

The flight took place when the 21-year-old Texas State University student took a flight from Baltimore to South Florida last November.

While in school at Wilson College, in Pennsylvania, Aldecosea developed a growth in her neck. United Airlines said the bird did not meet its guidelines. Typically airlines allow common pets, like dogs and cats, to board planes.

However, the airline strenuously denies that its employees played any part in encouraging Pebbles' untimely death.

The incident comes shortly after a story about an emotional support peacock being denied entrance to a United Airlines flight went viral.
