Apple's glass problem, in the office

California health and safety law requires employers to protect their workforce "against the hazard of walking through glass" by installing barriers or conspicuous markings, leading to speculation Apple could be fined for violating workplace regulations. The building's design was crafted by famed architect Norman Foster, taking major cues from Apple co-founder Steve Job's vision for the new headquarters. Are Apple executives willing to have employees suffering the consequences of smashing their heads into glass regularly?

Housing around 13,000 employees, Apple Park, as the headquarters is known, is a futuristic feat of engineering that contains the world's largest piece of curved glass.

Last year, Apple finished construction on its new 175-acre campus, designed by the company's design chief Jony Ive and British architectural firm Foster + Partners.

The campus is nearly entirely made out of glass panes, including the workspaces ("pods") inside the building which are surrounded by glass panes.

Place thousands of people distracted by iPhones in a building that is mostly transparent, and perhaps the results are inevitable. It's not clear how many incidents there have been.

In order to help mitigate the issue, many employees started to use Post-it notes to remind others that there's glass ahead. After the incidents, employees began using Post-its to mark where walls are, but the sticky notes were reportedly removed "because they detracted from the building's design".

All in all, we can see that glass has been a major component in the Apple Park campus.

The Independent has contacted Apple for a comment.

It's not the first time Apple's penchant for glass in buildings has caused problems. A tweet by Kenn Durrence in January also suggested "seven people injured themselves" by walking into glass doors. And therein lies the problem- Apple employees keep crashing into the fancy glass windows, which calls into the question the safety of the design. The suit was settled without any cost to Apple, according to a legal filing in early 2013.
