Apple's HomePod does not respect wood

Apple is facing criticism from customers who say its HomePod speaker leaves stains on wooden surfaces.

While the folks over at The Inquirer didn't have such a bad time removing the white rings left by their device, Wirecutter's and Pocket-Lint's marks were much more persistent, fading but never full disappearing. Most speakers have them and they do not damage wood. In a statement to Wirecutter, an Apple representative said that the "marks can improve over several days after the speaker is removed from the wood surface".

One user tweeted Apple that the new speaker left "etched circles" on their wooden furniture within 20 minutes of use, while others found the speaker left deeper and more obvious marks in several places and on several different types of wooden surface. Apple believes that the ring stains are caused by some sort of chemical reaction with certain wood surfaces treated with oil or wax. Now a new test has backed up that claim from Apple and highlighted another smart speaker that has a similar behavior...

The tech giant has acknowledged the problem, explaining that the "mild marks" are a reaction to the "vibration-dampening silicone base" and can happen to "any speaker" with the same coating. Apple has been making products that go on shelves and tables for years... and I've never seen a report of damage to a surface.

Some joked that Apple should instruct users to put a coaster under their HomePod, with one quipping that "ten 'HomePod Coaster" start ups were formed in the past two hours'.

Make sure you put a coaster down before placing your new Apple HomePod on a wooden surface.

If they don't, it recommends wiping wood tarnished by the HomePod with a soft or damp cloth, or cleaning the surface "with the furniture manufacturer's recommended cleaning process".

Ever since it was launched, one of the major issues with the smart speaker was that Siri was not "smart" enough, especially compared with the capabilities of the Amazon Echo's Alexa and the Google Home's Google Assistant. The company later published a support document stating that the only real fix would be to not place HomePod on wooden surfaces, which isn't a good answer for a product that could allegedly be placed "anywhere".
