Radford originally came out in December 2014, a little less than a year after the 2014 Olympics in Sochi concluded.

Out U.S. athletes Adam Rippon and Gus Kenworthy may be dominating headlines in the states, but Canada's Eric Radford is also earning much-deserved buzz for becoming the first openly gay Olympic champion in the history of the Winter Games, Yahoo News reports.

Radford won gold in the team event for his performance with his longtime figure skating partner, Meagan Duhamel. "We were trying to black out everything that was going on around us." .

Angela Ruggiero, the head of the International Olympics Committee's Athletes Commission, praised Radford's "fantastic" achievement.

He's one of 14 openly gay athletes competing in PyeongChang, but thanks to his superb skating in South Korea, he's the only one from that group who can claim to be the first with winter gold.

He also took to Instagram, posing with Adam Rippon - the bronze-medal figure skater who is the first openly gay athlete from the USA to compete in the Winter Games.

The 33-year-old Radford, who hails from tiny Balmertown, Ontario, celebrated his success with Rippon after the two received their respective medals. "Or maybe they just want to get out of their own small town and do something in the world", continued Radford, who skates with Sudbury's Duhamel.

Radford was part of the Canadian figure skating team's win in the mixed team final.

"This is wonderful! I literally feel like I might explode with pride", Radford wrote on Twitter after winning the gold. "I'll be fine.' But I kept it together", he said.
