  • Brawling family of 23 removed from Australian cruise ship

A violent 30-person brawl broke out on a relaxing family cruise ship in what has been dubbed the "cruise from hell".

Confronting footage of the brawl obtained by 3AW shows security guards were involved in the melee, although it does not show who instigated the fight.

NSW Police confirmed in a statement that they had removed passengers from the ship and were investigating the incident: "Police are investigating an alleged fight onboard a cruise ship while it was about 220km off Jervis Bay".

The ship docked at Melbourne in an unscheduled stop later that day, removing 23 passengers.

Some passengers were allegedly too afraid to leave their cabins having witnessed the fights which took place in public areas, including around the pool in front of families.

"He said: 'Please, Dad, please Dad, call the federal police".

Over the course of what some passengers had taken to calling the "cruise from hell", multiple violent incidents - including a fight in a nightclub and in an elevator - involving the extended family occurred, reportedly leaving some guests concerned for their safety and locking themselves in their rooms as a result.

"These incidents were complete isolated to this family group and out of character for the on board experience with Carnival Legend", Ms Vandekreeke said. "This is all over a thong [flip flop/sandal], not a foot, a thong being stepped on and being instantly apologised for", he said, according to Radio station 3AW. "I could hear a lot of screaming, crying in the background".

Police said six men and three teenage boys were removed from the ship and that a further 14 passengers, including women and children, also left the ship.

In what Carnival calls an "unprecedented" step, per, nine males were kicked off the boat later Friday when it stopped in Eden, Australia, say New South Wales police.

David Barkho says his son phoned and begged him to call authorities after he sustained a head injury while on the ship.

"The ship's security team is applying our zero tolerance policy in the interests of the safety and comfort of other guests".

"The ship's highly trained security staff have taken strong action in relation to a small group of disruptive guests who have been involved in altercations on board", the statement continued.

"Carnival Legend is now on a 10-day South Pacific cruise scheduled to be completed in Melbourne tomorrow [Saturday]".
