  • McArthur a 66-year-old landscaper was arrested on Jan. 18 and charged with two counts of first-degree murder

All five victims so far had ties to a predominantly gay neighborhood in Toronto and all were of Middle Eastern descent, according to NPR.

Authorities in the city of Toronto have now started backyard excavations and searches to see if more body parts can be found, especially in planters and flowerbeds, after suspecting that Bruce McArthur may have killed more people than the five he has been charged with.

Following his arrest, McArthur was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in relation to the disappearance of Andrew Kinsman and Selim Esen.

But police said only Kayhan is connected to Project Houston, the force's investigation into three men who disappeared from Toronto's Gay Village between 2010 and 2012.

Police have identified more than 30 properties where McArthur worked and urged his past clients to come forward. "I have no idea how many more there are going to be", Idsinga said. On Monday, three more charges of first-degree murder were added, in connection with the deaths of Majeed Kayhan, 58, Soroush Mahmudi, 50, and Dean Lisowick, 47.

Idsinga did not provide any details about a possible relationship between McArthur and any of the three new victims. He said the remains have not been identified. "There are at least two sites that we do want to excavate where people might be buried".

Each day gets harder and harder and although Idsinga wouldn't comment on the question of how this could compare to the Robert Picton pig farm case - in which 49 women were murdered - it's something everybody in the room and around the city are wondering.

The Ministry of the Attorney General said McArthur's lawyer is Jeffery Couse.

A witness named Peter Sgromo told The Globe that he had spoken to police after McArthur's arrest. In December, Saunders said publicly the evidence at the time led police to believe the disappearances were not a result of murders or a serial killer.

"We know that many in the community are struggling to understand and process these developments", Idsinga said. The police have come under fire from members of the public who believe concerns over the possibility of a serial killer in the area where not listened to for years.

Once inside, they found a young man tied up on McArthur's bed and set him free.

Vian Ewart, a resident of Balmoral Avenue, said multiple people along the street used McArthur's landscaping services and he said would often see McArthur tending to the properties in the spring and the fall.

Whatever happens next, said Stevens, she will never forget the faces of her friend or the man who is alleged to have slayed him.
