  • Oxfam scandal: Chief executive Mark Goldring must resign, says Priti Patel

Britain's charity watchdog has begun an inquiry into how Oxfam handled allegations of sexual abuse in Haiti in 2011.

That has other aid organizations desperately trying to distance themselves from Oxfam GB, fearing they, too, may lose government funding and donations.

"All I can tell you about this terrible revelation about Oxfam is that I am devastated", the Oscar-nominated actress wrote on Twitter.

'Unless you safeguard everyone your organisation comes into contact with, including beneficiaries, staff and volunteers - we will not fund you, ' Britain's development secretary Penny Mordaunt will say, according to excerpts of a speech she is due to give at a gathering of development agencies in Stockholm.

She continued: "While investigations have to be completed and any potential criminals prosecuted accordingly, what is clear is that the culture that allowed this to happen needs to change and it needs to change now".

Oxfam bosses could lose £30 million ($42 million) in annual government funding if authorities find evidence of foul play.

Pressure is now mounting on Mark Goldring, Oxfam's chief executive, who will be summoned to appear before a committee of MPs to be questioned about his response to the scandal.

"We take swift action in response to all allegations. M&S continues to monitor the situation very closely as we seek to understand the steps that Oxfam is taking to address them and develop a robust safeguarding plan for the future".

It's being claimed that staff for the charity in Haiti, and indeed in other countries too, paid vulnerable people for sex.

Ms Driver, who is best known for starring in 1997 film Good Will Hunting, said she had been "horrified" by the claims and would be stepping down as a celebrity ambassador after 20 years with the charity.

Evans, who was in charge of investigating allegations against Oxfam staff members between 2012 and 2015, told Channel 4 television that abuse cases she had heard of included a woman who had been coerced to have sex in exchange for aid.

"We were not aware of allegations made against this employee and received two references, as standard practice, at the time of recruitment", said Bain.

She has also called on all British charities active outside the country to provide moral leadership and transparency about their operations.

There were reports on Wednesday that there had already been complaints about van Hauwermeiren when he worked for the British medical charity Merlin in Liberia.

The report came the same day as the chairman of Oxfam's worldwide umbrella group, Juan Alberto Fuentes, was arrested in his home country Guatemala.

Also on Tuesday, Oxfam International's chairman, Juan Alberto Fuentes - a former Guatemalan finance minister - was arrested as part of a Guatemalan corruption investigation, the public prosecutor's office there said.
