Myanmar allocates Tk125cr for constructing fence along Bangladesh border

Following the discovery of a mass grave in the village of Inn Din in late December, the Myanmar military, however, admitted that members of the security forces and Rakhine villagers had unlawfully killed 10 men and violated the "rules of engagement".

The report stated that over 534,000 Rohingya children are living in refugee camps in Bangladesh, while almost 185,000 Rohingya children remain in Myanmar's Rakhine state, subjected to ongoing violence.

"We saw the ultimate effect of a society encouraged to hate, scapegoat and fear minorities laid bare in the horrific military campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya people in Myanmar".

"I think the figure increased as we held many promotional events, and the government has allowed tourists to travel previously restricted areas", U Myint Htwe, deputy director general at the ministry, said in an interview.

Adams said the "random" satellite images only reflected a partial picture and fears the situation could be far worse. A 2013 report on Myanmar by the McKinsey Global Institute, estimated that tourism could contribute $14.1 billion to Myanmar's economy by 2030 and employ around 2.3 million people.

The AP reported some reasons to doubt the assertion that construction efforts were meant to help the Rohingya, who "fear authorities are seizing land they've lived on for generations". Myanmar's Buddhist majority is often accused of subjecting them to discrimination and violence.

Between January 9 and February 13, bulldozers razed two settlements in the village of Myin Hlut that appeared intact in images from November 2017, the non-profit said.

Authorities are "making continuous and unremitting efforts" to support "the socioeconomic development and creation of employment opportunities in Rakhine State" and enable the closure of the region's internally displaced person camps, the government said in a lengthy statement about the construction project posted earlier this week.

Myanmar's government, for its part, says the Rohingya - whom it calls "Bengalis" - burned their own homes as they left their villages.

Rights groups and the United Nations have warned against a hasty return of the refugees, saying that they will continue to face repression and discrimination in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, where they are considered illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and are denied citizenship and access to basic services.

"The government's clearing of dozens of villages only heightens concerns about Rohingya families being able to return home", Adams said.

"I've heard that authorities are working on the resettlement projects for the refugees who are returning homes", he told RFA.

HRW has called on the Burmese authorities to allow a United Nations fact-finding team in to Rakhine state. The country also blocked access for all independent media and human rights groups to northern Rakhine.

UNICEF says that immediate and unimpeded access to all children in the state is imperative, as well as longer-term efforts to address intercommunal tension and promote social cohesion.
