N. Korea Will Be 'Most Confrontational' Mass Destruction Threat to US, Allies

Mr Coats and other U.S. top intelligence chiefs were united on Tuesday in declaring that Russian Federation is continuing efforts to disrupt the USA political system and is targeting the 2018 midterm election, following its successful operation to sow discord in the most recent presidential campaign, New York Times reported.

The director of national intelligence made the remark at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, saying the regime poses a potentially "significant" threat to the US.

"We expect Russian Federation to continue using propaganda, social media, false-flag personas, sympathetic spokesmen and other means to influence, to try to build on its wide range of operations and exacerbate social and political fissures in the United States", Coats added.

The intelligence community put out a dire warning in testimony before Congress Tuesday: Russia remains determined to undermine American democracy as we head into the 2018 midterm elections.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told a congressional committee that Russian Federation and other foreign entities were likely to attack United States and European elections this year and beyond, adding that Moscow believes similar efforts successfully undermined USA democracy two years ago.

The heads of the CIA, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Security Agency, as well as the director of national intelligence, were all in agreement about how important it is to address this threat.

"We are pulling all of our elements of intelligence gathering together to provide a very, very deep dive into what China's plan - is doing now and what their plans are for the future and how it would - impact on the United States", he said.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said the bureau is undertaking "a lot of specific activities" to counter Russian meddling but was "not specifically directed by the president".

Despite Trump's confusion, the former issue is actively being investigated by special prosecutor Robert Mueller and multiple congressional committees, while the latter has been affirmed and put to bed by the entire USA intelligence apparatus.

In Germany's election last September, public discussion of a feared Russian cyber campaign, and an agreement among political parties not to exploit information gathered in cyber attacks - an accord unlikely to be replicated in the United States - appeared to help inoculate the country against outside meddling.

"The tools they use are everything from hacking into companies and critical infrastructure and defence contractors - everybody you can imagine - to using our immigration system against us, to even our universities", Rubio said. And if they don't think it's important yet, maybe they would heed the word of the Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats.

Regardless, U.S. intelligence officials testifying at the Senate hearing said Kim Jong Un still views nuclear weapons as key to his own survival in power.

"Frankly, the United States is under attack", said Coats, "under attack by entities that are using cyber to penetrate virtually every major action that takes place in the United States".

"This threat did not begin in 2016, and it certainly didn't end with the election".
