  • Woman gives birth and leaves note after abandoning infant son in Arizona airport bathroom as authorities ask for public's help in identifying her

The woman then took the baby to the restroom outside the rental auto facility, where she left him with a handwritten note which read, "please help me". My mum had no idea she was pregnant. She is unable and unfit to take care of me.

A baby believed born in a Tucson International Airport restroom was left behind with a note that said, "I'm sorry".

"I just want what is best for him and and it's not me". Airport spokeswoman Jessie Butler told the Post in a statement that the baby is in the custody of the Arizona Department of Child Safety.

An airport custodian says she asked the woman if she was OK after finding blood on the floor of a restroom.

Tucson Airport Authority officials released surveillance video that purportedly shows the mother of the child, seen walking through the airport holding something wrapped in blue fabric.

The airport authority also released photos of the scene and the handwritten letter found with the child.

Arizona has a "safe haven" law, meaning a newborn - no more than 3 days old - can be left at hospitals, churches, fire houses and similar locations.

Airport police officials say they're looking for the woman, who has yet to be identified, and that criminal charges are yet to be determined, Butler told the Star. "We would like to know who she is but we've exhausted our resources", an airport authority explained to the Washington Post.

Over the last 20 years U.S. states have introduced safe-haven laws allowing newborn babies to be left at designated areas such as hospitals and firehouses, to prevent the precarious practice of dumping unwanted infants on doorsteps or under bushes.

But the airports are not among facilities commonly designated as safe havens. "There is a lot of fear".
