No progress for Romania in Corruption Perception Index

The high degree of publicity and exposure given by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to corruption-related cases may create a more negative perception which could have contributed to the drop in Malaysia's Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) score and ranking, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Paul Low Seng Kuan. The country's latest index score is 34.

It is Brazil's worst position since 2012.

Surprisingly, the majority of the ranked countries scored below 50 in the index. However, the news is not good for India as its position has slipped globally to 81 among a group of 180 countries. By taking several steps which include; declaration and publishing of assets of the President and his officials.

"Let us call a spade a spade and conduct a true anti corruption war rather than an anti opposition war".

"They must do more to uphold public trust and confidence as leaders of the country's integrity building and anti-corruption efforts Ensure safe and secure environment for the media, civil society and other advocates to thrive".

The Corruption Perception Index 2017 has termed India as the worst offenders in the Asia-Pacific region.

The report, put together by Transparency International, ranks countries annually by their perceived levels of corruption, as determined by expert assessments and opinion surveys.

Jamaica's Caricom neighbour Barbados, has been ranked the least corrupt country in the English-speaking Caribbean with a ranking of 25.

Worawit said the World Economic Forum's Executive Opinion Survey has given Thailand a higher score than previous year, probably the result of the restoration of relationship with the EC and of foreign investors having more positive views on the country's investment and business contacts with the government. "It reveals that from significantly below-the-average score in both the Americas and globally in 2016, Jamaica's 2017 score is now on par with the Americas and marginally above the global average", Munroe added.

Further analysis show journalists and activists in corrupt nations risk their lives every day in an effort to speak up.

The least corrupt country in the world is New Zealand with the score of 89, followed by Denmark (88) and Finland (85). Syria (score 14), South Sudan (score 12), and Somalia (score 9) received the poorest rankings on the list. In figures broken down according to world regions, Western Europe performed best with an average score of 66.

TI recommended that Kenya must do more to encourage free speech, independent media, political dissent and an open and engaged civil society.
