Non-profit organization speaks on proposed SNAP changes

Milk Mulvaney who now serves as the White House Budget director said that the program will be similar to the meal-kit delivery service which has for years proven to be very dominant. A spokesperson with the organization tells KGUN9 SNAP is the very program that so many families in Southern Arizona count on for food to get them through a hard time, and to help stretch food budgets until a payday.

"Many people are concerned about how this idea could be implemented", Waide said. The program would represent a significant undertaking in terms of logistics for the federal bureaucracy that the White House and the Trump administration have time and time again claimed to be wasteful and unwieldy.

"It would require warehouses, it would require boxing distribution, getting people to pick up their food, I can see a lot of challenges with it", she said.

Stacy Dean, vice president for food assistance policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, said the work requirement initiatives are created to get millions of people who now rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits off the rolls rather than encourage or enable more people to find and keep jobs.

But advocates say that while encouraging people to work is fundamentally a good thing, imposing strict requirements on already vulnerable populations, particularly when coupled with an aggressive effort to slash funding and shrink public assistance programs, could be disastrous for those in need.

The food inside the box would be USA -grown "shelf-stable foods, such as milk, juice, grains, ready-to-eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans, canned meat, poultry or fish, and canned fruits and vegetables", according to the agency.

The goal of this proposal is to save more than $100 billion dollars over the next 10 years. Importantly, states would ultimately be left to administer and pay for the costs around the program.

The proposal is part of a broader plan to gut the SNAP program, reducing it by roughly $213 billion - almost 30 per cent - over the next decade.

She said the proposal, if enacted, "would be devastating for the one-in-eight Americans who use SNAP to put food on the table every day".

The supplying of the SNAP boxes also raised questions for Mrs. Jones, given the rural nature of the north country.

It would dramatically alter how food assistance for the poor is delivered in the United States. "Low-income families need more access to fresh produce & healthy foods, not less". Omilami asked. "And how do you address issues of people that need food but don't have a residence?"

Here is a statement from USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue. About 44 million people participated in SNAP each month in 2016, at an annual cost of $70.9 billion.

The president's budget still needs to be approved by Congress.

"Having choices is more American", he said.
