North Korean leader offers to meet South Korean president

Kim Jong Un wanted to meet Moon "at an early date" and Moon had said "let's create conditions to make it happen", Blue House spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom told a news briefing.

The spokesman says Moon also called for a quick resumption of dialogue between the United States and North Korea.

Kim delivered the North Korean leader's invitation to the South Korean President for a summit in the North Korean capital at the earliest possible opportunity, though it remains unclear if Moon has accepted it. Asian media outlets quickly circulated photos of sprawling messages that Kim Yo Jong and Kim Yong Nam left in the Blue House's guest book. "Putting in real effort is our people's wish".

The North Korean leader's doppelganger has not given up on causing another stir in the future. It figured to be because no matter which side of the border they were representing, Korean hockey players simply aren't ready to compete on such a big world stage.

While U.S. leadership gave North Korea the cold shoulder as expected, North and South Korea are coming together at the Winter Olympics in ways that few could have really predicted.

Pence is viewing the short-track competition, in which eight Americans are participating.

Moon himself, Kim Yo-jong - Kim Jong-un's sister and close confidante - and North Korea's ceremonial head of state Kim Yong-nam all cheered the combined team together from the VIP box and, hours before the game, Kim Yo-jong invited Moon to visit Pyongyang in what would be the first such summit since 2007.

Prior to his arrival in South Korea, Pence told reporters in Japan part of the reason for his visit was to counter North Korean propaganda. Pence did not attend the hockey game.

Even Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has shared the American skepticism of warming North-South relations and pressed Moon against falling for the North's "smile diplomacy", greeted Kim Yong Nam.

Some 500 North Koreans, including 22 athletes, were in attendance during the opening ceremonies. As they paraded, a familiar folk song known as "Arirang", considered an unofficial national anthem, played in the background.

Vice President Mike Pence is cheering on US speed skaters at the Winter Olympics, before departing South Korea for Washington on Saturday. President Donald Trump has sought to maximize pressure on North Korea to pressure Kim into giving up his nuclear weapons, and his administration hasn't ruled out a preemptive attack. The pressure campaign is not only going to continue, it's going to intensify until they denuclearize and that all options are on the table. She wanted them to know she was happy they were going, she told them, even as she anxious they might not make it home. They decided just two months ago to go ahead with the trip.

Pyeongchang Olympics organisers were looking into a disruption of non-critical systems on the day of the opening ceremony but could not yet confirm if it was a cyberattack, Games spokesman Sung Baik-you said on Saturday.

"The grievances that the world has about North Korea are very legitimate. The world cannot turn a blind eye to the oppression & threats of the Kim regime".

"We don't want to speculate because we're still trying to find out what the root source is", said Nancy Park, a spokesperson for the Games organisers.

The team has compiled its own "dictionary" of different ice hockey terms to better communicate with each other, she said. Pence's father, Edward Pence, was a veteran of the Korean War - he won a Bronze Star for his military service in 1953.
