  • The scene shows what according to Syrian rebels were fires caused by Russian military plane shot down by rebel forces near Idlib Syria reportedly on February 3

The rebels oppose President Bashar al-Assad, whose troops are backed by Russian Federation, as they see Russian Federation as an invading force who they blame for the deaths of thousands of civilians.

According to vidoes posted online, the aircraft was shot down using a man portable air defense (manpad) and it came down near the town of Saraqib.

Russian military circles now discuss the possibility that the anti-aircraft missile used in downing a jet over the Idlib de-escalation zone town days ago, could be a US-made "stinger".

Nine people were treated for breathing difficulties after a bomb believed to be filled with chlorine was dropped on a rebel-held town in Syria, medics say. The pilot ejected from the plane. At least one hospital, in Maaret al-Numan, was forced to close following multiple strikes, the Syrian American Medical Society said.

USA officials expressed alarm last week at a rise in reports that the Syrian military is using chlorine as a chemical weapon against opposition-held areas. The agency quoted the defense ministry as saying it used "precision-guided weapons" to carry out the strike but without giving details.

It said the area was "under the control of Al-Nusra Front fighters", the former Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda that makes up the bulk of the HTC.

A statement from the opposition Syrian Coalition strongly condemned what it called a "barbaric onslaught by the Russian occupation and the Assad regime forces targeting mainly civilians and residential neighbourhoods" in Idlib. The Idlib area is home to over 1.1 million of Syria's 6.5 million internally displaced people (IDPs), many of whom escaped other formerly opposition-held areas after they were overrun by government forces, according to United Nations figures.Hundreds of thousands are trying to escape the intensified assault and are seeking refuge at makeshift camps near Turkey's border.

The pilot ejected before the crash and was captured, United Kingdom -based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told the BBC.

Reports say Russian Federation fired numerous missiles from both the Mediterranean Sea and its Khmeimim air base in Syria. It is the first time a Russian fighter has been shot down by Syrian rebels attempting to overthrow the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
