  • Reuters report alleges murder, arson by Myanmar's military

Asked about the evidence Reuters had uncovered about the massacre, Myanmar government spokesman Zaw Htay said on Thursday, before publication of the report: "We are not denying the allegations about violations of human rights".

In what global observers including the United Nations have said amounts to ethnic cleansing, the Myanmar military and militias have since driven out hundreds of thousands of the country's Rohingya minority in a campaign of killings, burning and rape. In a single month, more than 6,700 Rohingya Muslims were killed in Rakhine state, where the conflict erupted, according to Doctors Without Borders.

The foreign secretary will see first-hand the conditions of the Rohingya who have fled Burma to refugee camps in Bangladesh and discuss with the Burmese government the steps needed to enable them to return to their homes.

And last week, The Associated Press published a report on the use of mass graves to hide systematic executions of Rohingya prisoners, pulling from photographs and testimony from refugees.

Reuter's report is in line with AP's report and describes in graphic, disturbing detail the account of atrocities in the Myanmar massacre.

"At least two were hacked to death by Buddhist villagers".

Reuters said its reconstruction of the massacre drew for the first time on interviews with Buddhist villagers who admitted torching Rohingya villages, burying bodies and killing Muslims.

According to Reuters' special report, published Thursday, Myanmar soldiers detained and executed 10 Rohingya men and teenage boys with the help of local Buddhist villagers in Rakhine state's Inn Din village on September 2.

The controversial report also includes photographs of the mass grave sites that were taken by Wa Lone, one of the journalists detained for working on the Myanmar massacre story.

This is the first official visit by a foreign secretary in ten years.

Almost 690,000 Rohingya have fled their villages and crossed the border of western Myanmar into Bangladesh since August.

In a statement released on January 10, the Tatmadaw acknowledged that 10 Rohingya men were massacred at Inn Din and claimed they were among a group of 200 "terrorists" who attacked the village.

The account marked the first time soldiers and paramilitary police have been implicated by testimony from security personnel in arson and killings in the north of Rakhine state that the United Nations has said may amount to genocide.
