  • The CDC Says A Salmonella Outbreak Might Be Linked To Kratom

Kratom, or Mitragyna speciosa, is a plant in the coffee family that's native to Southeast Asia. Of the 11 patients interviewed regarding the food that they have eaten over the previous months, eight of them consumed kratom in the form of tea, powder, or pills.

Cases have also been reported in Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and OR to name a few. In 2016, the Drug Enforcement Administration tried but failed to classify the plant as a Schedule I Controlled Substance.

The federal agency had received confirmation of 28 people across 20 states with infections from Salmonella I 4, [5], 12:b:- as of February 16, according to the outbreak notice posted today. FDA warned the public in November 2017 that the plant has the same risks of abuse and addiction as opioids.

The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday said it recalled and destroyed a large volume of kratom-containing dietary supplements made by a company in Missouri.

Kratom has never gained FDA approval and is largely unregulated - meaning that, as with most supplements, it's nearly impossible to verify what's actually in "kratom" pills, powders, or teas.

The CDC is reporting 1 case of Salmonella poison in Alabama but no deaths. In a recent FDA statement, Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, shared additional associated adverse events and scientific analysis of the plant with further evidence on kratom's opioid properties.

Health officials are again warning Americans not to consume kratom, but this time it's not the effects of the supplement that are concerning, but instead, that the substance could be contaminated with Salmonella.

Additionally, kratom should not be used to treat any medical conditions, nor should it be used as an alternative to prescription opioids.

Kratom goes by a variety of names including Thang, Kakuam, Thom, Ketom, and Biak. "There are three FDA-approved products that are safe and effective for the treatment of opioid use disorder and we encourage patients to seek advice from their health care professional and pursue treatment for addiction".
