The future of the U.S. Soccer Federation could soon be dramatically reshaped, as for the first time since 2006, there will be a new face leading the charge for the sport in America after Saturday's USSF Presidential election.
Carlos Cordeiro, the federation's vice-president, was elevated to replace the outgoing leader, Sunil Gulati, after winning a majority verdict following three ballots in a crowded field of eight. But almost all of the backlash during this election towards U.S. Soccer, aside from the women's national team deserving equal pay, is because of one thing: the men's national team failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. "We have to do a number of things ourselves to make it happen, and make it happen more rapidly".
It was the first contested election since 1998.
"Elections are messy", said Gulati during a 45-minute address before the electronic votes were cast on cellphone-sized voting pads that caused a fair amount of head-scratching in amongst the electorate.
The second ballot saw Cordeiro pull further clear by securing 41.8 per cent to Carter's 33.3, with Wynalda a distant third on 10.8 per cent.
A business executive with more than 30 years of experience in global finance, he became a partner at Goldman Sachs in the early 1990s and was later appointed Vice Chairman-Asia.
But if there were two establishment candidates, as many felt there were, Cordeiro was one of them.
"The Federation has lost its way and forgotten about the need to develop the sport for all", said an angry Solo, who has accused US Soccer of neglecting the women's game and launched legal action last month, before the result was announced.
Cordeiro's percentage increased each round of the body's first contested election in almost two decades, rising from 36.3 to 41.8 on the second ballot. The professional, youth and adult councils each made up 25.7 percent of the vote; the athletes council made up 20 percent; and a smattering of individuals, including life members, the board of directors and even fan voters, made up the remaining 3 percent.
Paul Caligiuri dropped out after the first ballot, andMichael Winograd and Gans withdrew after the second ballot. Martino drew 10.6 percent on the final ballot, while Wynalda and Solo received 8.9 and 1.4, respectively. "It's not about any one council". No one council has enough votes to get you across the line. To those of you who didn't vote for me, I'm going to work to earn your support and trust over the next four years.
