Zuckerberg: Users spending 50 million fewer hours a day on Facebook

  • Facebook announced Monday that it’s going to put more local news in users’ news feeds as part of an ongoing campaign to make users “happier.”

Facebook on Monday said it's prioritizing local news on the social network as part of the tech firm's efforts to encourage more users to interact on and off the site.

"Z"-as I call him (behind his back, unless he reads this column every week)-is the guy who pretty much decrees, with merely the flick of his regal wrist, what you and me and everybody see on our Facebook news feeds. Local news helps us understand the issues that matter in our communities and affect our lives", Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a social media post".

The social network will use the links clicked by readers living in a small geographic area to identify local publishers.

Pressure has been building on Facebook and its CEO as the toxic content flowing through Facebook - violent live videos, fabricated news articles and divisive messages from Russian operatives that rocked the 2016 US presidential campaign - has been blamed for social problems.

"Starting today, we're going to show more stories from news sources in your local town or city", Zuckerberg said in a.

Facebook said it increased its provision for 2017 income taxes by $2.27 billion, citing US tax changes.

Zuckerberg said on Wednesday that Facebook made changes in the fourth quarter that cut the number of viral videos in people's news feeds. In December, the company admitted that the site can be bad for users who are merely consuming information but not interacting with family and friends. "In 2018, we're focused on making sure Facebook isn't just fun to use, but also good for people's wellbeing and for society". They also say they want to see news about what's happening in the world and their local community.

The move had anxious investors, who feared that the changes would lead people to spend less time on Facebook.

Facebook said it will start ranking local news higher on the News Feed in the United States, but plans to roll out the changes to other countries this year.

According to a Travelport survey presented in the autumn of 2017, 82% of American travelers aged 25 to 34 are affected by the content published in social media by travel brands, while 76% of 35-44 age-olds are inspired or affected by such content. If it hits those revenue expectations, that would be a 43% increase from a year ago, while if EPS is on target, it will be an astounding 62% improvement.

"2017 was a strong year for Facebook, but it was also a hard one". For the last three months of the year, Facebook reported a record sales quarter, amassing $12.97 billion in revenue, more than the $12.54 billion Wall Street was expecting.
