  • After Nepal Plane Crash, Sushma Swaraj Offers Help To Bangladesh Counterpart

A survivor of the plane crash at Kathmandu's global airport said Monday that the US-Bangla Airlines plane began "behaving strangely" on descent before crash-landing near the airport, killing at least 49 people.

The US-Bangla Airlines flight from Dhaka swerved repeatedly as it descended towards Tribhuvan International Airport, witnesses said.

Police spokesperson Manoj Neupane told the BBC there were 22 people being treated in hospital, some in a critical condition. The pilot entered runway from opposite side to one for which he had received permission, as stated by Director-General of Nepal Civil Aviation Authority, Najiv Gautam.

"We are trying to bring the fire under control", airport spokesman Birendra Prasad Shrestha said.

Rescue workers and soldiers from Nepal's army were called in to help assist survivors out of the wreckage amid thick smoke, shutting down the airport for several hours on Monday before operations reopened.

Pilots say that landing at Kathmandu airport can be challenging because of the mountainous landscape. The black box of the aircraft was recovered from the spot, Mr. Chhetri said.

The plane from the US-Bangla Airlines was 17 years old.

US-Bangla Airlines' Asif, however, said that wrong signals might have led to the crash.

Wreckage of an airplane at Kathmandu airport

It is Nepal's only global airport and experts say the surrounding Himalayan landscape makes it testing for pilots coming into land. The conversation between the air traffic controllers and the pilot, which was made public, suggested the pilot ignored instructions from the ground. He told the Kathmandu Post that he was seated near the window and was able to break the window.

Offering his condolences, Nepalese Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli promised an immediate investigation.

A commercial plane carrying over 70 people crashed near a Kathmandu airport in Nepal on Monday morning. This is the most severe air crash at the Kathmandu airport after a Turkish Airlines flight crash-landed in March 2015.

Those aboard included 33 Nepali passengers, with 32 from Bangladesh, one from China and one from the Maldives.

Flights out of the airport were canceled after the incident.

The Dhaka-based US-Bangla Airlines is a private carrier that launched in July 2014 with the motto "Fly Fast Fly Safe".

In 2012, a plane carrying trekkers to Mount Everest region hit a bird and crashed in Kathmandu, killing all on board.

Nepal too has a record of poor air safety.
