Amazon, which now offers AI translation as a service for developers, does not now provide cultural context or understanding through Alexa.

Amazon on Friday is having issues with its cloud-based "Amazon Web Services" system that is causing outages on several major platforms including the company's own Alexa service.

Word of this potential Alexa upgrade suggests that Amazon is getting more serious about taking Alexa mobile. It would ideally have an understanding of Japanese culture as well and would incorporate that knowledge into its translations.

Amazon's Alexa AI assistant is down for countless users this morning. If you buy something featured, we may earn an affiliate commission which helps support our work. Running with the latter example, one of the goals would be for Alexa to differentiate between asking "What do I say to the father of the bride in Japan?" and "What do I say to the master of ceremonies at a wedding in Japan?"

Amazon Echo owners at Business Insider confirmed that Alexa is acting up, and it's being slow and buggy.

According to the report, Amazon's team never pointed fingers at company CEO Jeff Bezos, but Nest employees reportedly ended the call under the impression that the decision came from Bezos.

Alexa is already capable of translating short terms and phrases from Spanish, German, Italian, French, and English into native languages.

A report from Yahoo Finance suggests that Amazon is looking to amp up Alexa's translation skills, by also including how to respond to cultural norms.
