  • Fire crews battle blaze at Metro Hotel building

The fire broke out about 7.30pm at the 15-storey Metro hotel in Ballymun in the north of the Irish capital.

More than 60 firefighters were tackling a blaze in the upper floors of a hotel tower block near Dublin airport last night, forcing a full evacuation.

Dublin Fire Brigade said eight fire engines, specialist fire-fighting equipment and paramedics were at the scene.

There are no reports of injuries and all guests, approximately 150, have been accounted for. According to the eyewitness John Sheridan, "at least five floors" of the building may be covered by a flame.

Dublin City Council has confirmed no homeless families were staying in the hotel at the time.

The hotel had been used as emergency accommodation for some of Dublin's homeless.

It is understood that the building has been evacuated since the fire erupted this evening.

Traffic diversions were in place around the hotel.

The complex was built in 2006 and comprises 88 hotel rooms and 30 apartments.
