National People's Party (NPP) leader Conrad Sangma is set to be sworn in as the next Meghalaya chief minister on Tuesday with support from the BJP and regional players, ending the uncertainty over who will rule the state after the February assembly polls didn't give a clear majority to any party.

NPP President Conrad Sangma on Sunday is likely to become chief minister of Meghalaya.

Furthermore, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader noted that since one MLA out of every two MLAs of all supporting political parties will be a part of the new government, one MLA out of the two BJP MLAs will also be a part of it.

Sangma said on Saturday his party would be able to form the next government with the help of other like-minded parties. The BJP has said that it will encourage regional parties to form government.

The ruling Congress bagged 21 seats in the 60-member Meghalaya assembly and emerged as the single biggest victor. "Therefore, we have come and staked our claim to form the government".

Meghalaya voters returned a hung Assembly with the ruling Congress emerging as the single largest party with 21 seats in the 60-member house, 10 short of the 31 seats needed to retain power in the Northeastern state.

As per agency reports, NPP president Conrad K Sangma met Governor Ganga Prasad earlier today to stake claim to form govt in Meghalaya.

A day after the election results in three north-east states, Congress' footprint has shrunk to just three of India, Karnataka, Punjab and Mizoram. Congress' count reduced by eight from the last Assembly polls while the BJP, which drew a blank in the last polls, bagged two seats. A delegation of three Congress leaders - Kamal Nath, Ahmed Patel and CP Joshi - met the governor at 7 pm last night.

The coalition-Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA)-comprises the NPP, the UDP, HSPDP and the BJP.

"The voice of the people should be respected and the BJP winning only two seats has proven that people rejected them", he added.

Following his meeting with Prasad, the NPP leader said that his party MLAs are committed to the development of the state and its people. The BJP has two legislators and our party has also made a decision to extend support to the NPP.
